The 30 September 19 interview – clip below, which is in Kinyarwanda, Major Michael Mupende narrates on the assassination of Gen Fred Rwigema.
In October 1990, Michael Mupende was a Lieutenant, and during this time, the rank of Lieutenant was a senior rank within the Rwanda Patriotic Army (RPA) rebel movement, especially when you consider that the current Generals in Rwanda Defence Forces were corporals at this time.
For example, during this time, Gen James Kabarebe, Gen Patrick Nyamvumba, Gen Charles Kayonga…etc, were 2nd lieutenants, characters like Brig Gen Dan Munyuza, Gen Jack Nziza..etc, were corporals. Therefore, Michael Mupende at the rank of a lieutenant , he was among the creame of the rebellion.
After the war in 1994, criminal Paul Kagame over looked him and other commanders in favour of his escorts, promoting his escorts while overlooking field commanders. Michael Mupende fled the potato enclave in 2001 after surviving several assassinations on his life.
