Ivory Coast President Alassane Dramane Ouattara, “I would like to solemnly announce that I have decided not to be a candidate in the presidential election on October 31, 2020 and to transfer power to a young generation.”
Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara said on Thursday he would not stand for re-election in October 2020, ending speculation about his political future ahead of highly-anticipated presidential elections.
President Alassane Dramane Ouattara declared in a speech before lawmakers that he would hand over power to a new generation after 10 years in office.
“I have decided not to be candidate in the Oct. 31 presidential election and to transfer power to a new generation,” Ouattara said, prompting applause, cheers and gasps from audience members in the capital Yamoussoukro.
