When did Kagame’s assassin, Joseph Kahanji, change his name to Joseph Nzabamwita? His real name while in Uganda, through university, was Joseph Kahanji. He then joined the RPA/F war in Rwanda. At the end of the war, he reemerged as Captain Joseph Nzabamwita and became a senior torturer at the Directorate of Military Intelligence (DMI).
Now, Joseph Kahanji, alias Joseph Nzabamwita, is a Major General and the nominal head of Rwanda’s National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS). The actual head of NISS is Brigadier General Jean Paul Nyirubutama, who was born in Burundi and serves as the chief of external intelligence under NISS.
Joseph Kahanji, also known as Major General Joseph Nzabamwita, is the titular NISS chief, while the real power lies with Brigadier General Jean Paul Nyirubutama, a close ally of Jeannette Nzirorera Kajuga Gasana Kagame.
