“During the night from Friday to Saturday February 17 at 2 AM, the attack drones of Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) which left Rwandan territory, violated the territorial limits of the DRC and targeted Goma airport with an aim to destroy or damage aircrafts of the Armed Forces of the DRC and when we followed the drone trajectory that came from Rwanda, their aim was Army aircrafts based at Goma Airport,” said this Saturday, February 17, by Lieutenant Colonel Ndjike Kaiko, spokesperson for the military governor of North Kivu. He declared this during a statement to the press in Goma.

However, he noted, FARDC aircrafts based at Goma Airport were not affected. But civilian planes were hit and damaged, he concludes.

Despite this incident, airport activities continued normally this Saturday at Goma airport.

On January 24, 2023, a shell fired from Rwanda targeted a DRC fighter plane. The artillery shelling had come from a heavy weapon fired from neighboring Rwandan town of Rubavu.

The special force of Rwanda Defence Force has cheap drones that they use to hit targets, and in military operations they are known as suicide drones or Kamikaze drones or exploding drones. These drones are mounted with explosives, and used to attack targets by crashing into it. Once used effectively, they are devastating and destructive. These are the types of drones that RDF used to target FARDC  aircrafts based at Goma airport.
